What is weather & How does it affect the maritime industry?

The short-term state of the atmosphere (temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, cloudiness, atmospheric pressure etc.) at a given place in immediate past, present, or immediate future is called weather.

Weather is one of many factors which greatly affects maritime activities including recreational activities. Without a weather forecast it would be risky and dangerous to venture into any maritime activity both offshore and/or onshore

Weather forecast can help greatly in preventing accidents in maritime sectors, including loss of ships/crafts/fixed & floating installations, cargo & personnel injuries.

Now a days there are warnings about the development of a hurricane/cyclone/typhoon or other serious weather phenomena. This information is usually available many days before the heavy weather arrives. The key is how this information is being used and what preventive measures are being taken.

In maritime sectors weather forecast need to be taken seriously by all concerned.
